Japan is host to some of the best quality, tasty, and downright beautiful looking farm produce in the world. Many people seem to agree on this, resulting in Japanese fruits and vegetables becoming extremely popular worldwide.
Unfortunately, one often has to pay a premium price to be able to enjoy these treasures when not in Japan itself.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel however: the Japanese Farmers’ Market, where farmers from several prefectures like Kyushu, Fukuoka, and Hokkaido have arrived on our shores to sell you their best produce DIRECTLY with no pesky mark ups!
Read on to find out what’s good to eat!
So many things to try, but so little time. Here’s what I dug into:
#1 Mikan oranges
Fruits are one of the main highlights of the Farmers’ Fair and I was blown away by the sheer quality and quantity of what was available.
The Mikan oranges from Fukuoka were here in full force, coming in all sorts of shapes and sizes: big, small, and everything in-between.
With their beautifully vibrant skin and perfectly balanced sweet, tangy flavour, these Mikan oranges were an absolute delight.
#2 Fuji Apples
Any fan of fruits is no stranger to Fuji Apples, and these ones certainly lived up to their reputation.
Practically pristine in appearance, the Nagano Sun Fuji Apples looked just as magnificent as they tasted. To have so many of them right before me ripe for the picking was pure heaven!
#3 Fuyuukaki (富有柿) Persimmons
Fresh, juicy and with an irresistibly crunchy texture, the Fuyuukaki Persimmons were highly addictive.
Every fruit also comes individually packed, assuring that you always get a ‘fresh experience’ every time.
#4 Kagoshima Vegetables
Kagoshima Prefecture presented us with luscious cabbages and Chinese cabbages and more from their lovely farms.
Grown with no pesticides or chemicals, these veggies had none of that bitter taste one would normally expect, making them a surprise hit – especially with picky eaters!
#5 Tons of Potatoes!
For the spud in all of us, there were tons of different kinds of potatoes available for munching on.
Yams, Kagoshima Potatoes, Hokkaido Matilda Potatoes, Beni Satsuma Sweet Potatoes…the variety was staggering!
These potatoes are fresh, tasty, and even peel with ease, making them big hits in kitchens everywhere.
The Japanese Farmers’ Market was a huge treat for myself, both visual and gastronomic.
Be sure to head down to the WAttention Plaza from the 11th – 18th February 2015 from 11am – 9.30pm – and prepare to be amazed!
